FREE MOT and Servicing Reminders Using The AA Mobile App

Smartphone

The majority of motorists are fully aware of the annual MOT test and how important regular servicing is to your vehicle, but how many of us actually remember the date these are due?

The AA has created a fantastic App for your smartphone or tablet, which allows you to set up reminders for when your MOT and service is due each year. It’s free to download and use and you don’t have to be a member of The AA to use the reminders service. You can find out more by visiting the App page on The AA website.

Last year, over 50% of all faults found during MOT tests were deemed avoidable if motorists had regularly serviced their vehicles, therefore it’s an important part of keeping your car or van roadworthy and avoiding expensive repair bills in the future. You can book a minor or major car service at our service station in Neath Port Talbot by calling us on 01639 886352.

Police Warn Drivers to Check Tyres or Face Fine

bald tyre

Following a serious Road Traffic Accident in Telford this month, Police are reminding drivers that it is their own responsibility to check the condition of the tyres on their vehicles.

The two-car collision resulted in the emergency services being called, and police investigators were quickly able to spot the cause of the accident – bald tyres. This will now result in the driver of the defective vehicle receiving a possible £200 fine and 6 penalty points on their licence. Furthermore, the driver’s insurance company may also refuse to pay out as the car was not classed as ‘in legal condition’.

If you’re unsure about the condition of your own vehicle tyres, don’t risk being the driver who causes an accident. We offer a free tyres check to customers in Neath Port Talbot who visit us, and can then advise if the tyre needs replacing.

Michelin to Prototype Advanced Airless Tyres

Michelin tyres

If you’ve been that person struggling to change a flat tyre on the roadside, this one is for you.

Michelin are currently trialling a new prototype advance puncture-proof tyre which is made with a form of fibreglass and aluminium. The UPTIS (Unique Puncture-Proof Tyre System) is jointly being developed with General Motors, and both companies state that the tyre could be available on the road within the next 5 years. Tougher than conventional tyres, this new technology is designed to avoid dangerous blowouts and a minimal friction also aims to improve fuel economy. They are also cheaper and last longer than current conventional inflated tyres.

In the meantime, if you are a customer in Neath or Port Talbot, pop in for great deals on cheap tyres.

Check Your Tyre Treads & Stay Safe

Car tyre check

When you buy a new tyre for your car or vehicle, the depth of the tread is approximately 8mm. The minimum legal depth is 1.6mm, but motoring organisations such as the AA or RAC usually recommend replacing your tyres at 2mm. Worn tyre treads are a serious safety risk, but can also prove to be costly. A fine for bald tyres in the UK is £2,500 plus three points on your licence per tyre. Therefore, it’s very important to check them regularly for signs of damage or wear.

What Causes Your Tyres to Wear?

A typical lifespan of a good quality tyre is around 3 to 5 years, but there are a number of factors that can cause increased tyre wear. These include:

  • Incorrect tyre pressures – over- or under-inflated tyres can cause uneven wear on your tyres;
  • Driving style – accelerating quickly and braking hard will increase the wear on your tyres, or even result in a more rapid air loss;
  • Overloading – a heavy car will cause your tyres to overheat, increasing the risk of an accident and increasing tyre wear;
  • Alignment – check your wheel alignment or your tyres will wear unevenly.

How Do I Check My Tyres?

Your tyres should include indicators that show you how close you are to the legal limit. These indicators are small raised areas at the bottom of the grooves on your tyres. When the tread rubber is level with these raised areas, it’s an indication that the tread depth is approaching the legal limit of 1.6mm, and you should have your tyres checked, and replaced if necessary.

There is another common method of checking your tyre tread depth using a 20p coin. Put the coin into the grooves of the tyre. If the outer band of the coin is hidden when inserted, your tyre is above the legal limit.

The RAC has produced a useful video that explains why you should check your tyres regularly and get them replaced.

Car Servicing – Why Is It So Important?

engine check

We have many customers who question the importance of regular car servicing. Ultimately, it will make the biggest difference between your vehicle running smoothly and fuel efficiently, and the risk of break down and having to spend money on unexpected repair bills. Avoiding paying for regular servicing is a false economy – unexpected wear and tear requiring maintenance will fast become an expensive major fault requiring repair or even replacement.

Each car manufacturer and model will have a slightly different service schedule, usually based on your car’s mileage and age. You can usually find the service schedule within your vehicle’s user manual, or by searching online. We carry out different types of Car Servicing in Port Talbot depending on your requirements.

What Type of Service Does My Car Need?

There are two common types of service required for most vehicles on the road today:

Interim Service

Interim Service is usually a minor service with around 30-40 check points, including changes of oil and filters (depending on the mileage and manufacturer guidelines). We will check and change the tyre pressures, top up your clutch fluid and power steering reservoir, check your brake fluid levels, and fill your windscreen washers, if required.

We will also perform some checks on other parts of your car, and if these parts need repair or replacement, we will let you know in advance of carrying out any additional work and potentially incurring further costs.

You can book an Interim Car Service in Neath Port Talbot by calling us on 01639 886352.

Full Service

Our Full Service is a complete review of your vehicle and will include between 60-70 check points. The Full Service includes everyone that the Interim Service does, but also has some additional checks, top-ups, and changes, including items like your car’s air filter (based on mileage and vehicle usage). We will also check your coolant (or anti-freeze), gearbox fluid, clutch fluid, axle oil, spark plugs, and batteries. Depending on your specific vehicle manufacturer and model, these may vary according to their own guidelines.

Having a Full Service with Royston Motor Co means that we will perform an overall health check on your car, and if there are other faults found that need attention, we will let you know in advance. We can then discuss what additional work may be required to rectify the faults and the costs likely to be incurred.

Do Winter Tyres Work?

winter tyres

We have been asked by a number of customers if ‘Winter’ tyres actually work better in cold weather conditions than normal tyres, and if they are worth purchasing.

Driving in a layer of fresh snow with ‘All Weather’ or ‘Winter’ tyres will certainly make a difference as the additional grip provided by these tyres will help prevent loss of traction. However, it’s much more likely that in the colder winter months, roads will have been treated or cleared so that driving conditions will result in a thinner layer of compacted snow or ice on the roads. In such conditions, you will find that you not only have additional grip but much more control over your vehicle.

Driving with normal or ‘Summer’ tyres in snow may result in not being able to get any traction on these road conditions, or worse still not being able to fully control your vehicle and drive in a straight line.

At Royston Motor Co, we strongly recommend that you consider fitting ‘Winter’ tyres if you are driving in the colder winter months. As a compromise, many customers choose to fit ‘All Weather’ tyres, which are a good year-round tyre choice. We can supply and fit a range of winter or all-weather cheap tyres to customers in Neath Port Talbot, so please get in touch!
